The Southwest Area Food Distribution Center Initiative

Cornerstone Outreach Center is sensitive to the ongoing needs of the community and the limited resources available through individuals, churches and grants to tackle the incredible demands placed on the ministry. With an increasing presence in Africa and the need to reach the truly unreached people of Africa, the center recognizes the need for a multi-generational economic project that will continue to fund all that the Lord has called this ministry to perform.

The Angel Food program has been a moderately successful financial venture, as well as an important source of discounted food for individuals and churches across the Panhandle, South Plains and Eastern New Mexico. At one time we had discussions with Angel Food about placing a regional distribution center here in Amarillo. As the program is currently expanding and their resources have been stretched there has been limited communication with them concerning this move. However, it is felt that once a commitment has been made on the part of the ministry to build or secure a warehouse designed to meet the needs of an aggressive food distribution program, Angel Food will quickly see the benefit to their organization and want to participate. In the unlikely event they choose not to do so, the center would still be in an optimal position to run its own food distribution center without the assistance of Angel Food.

The current arrangement has been successful despite the great distance from Atlanta to Amarillo. With a diminished distance between the Center and the client churches, greater profits can be expected for Cornerstone and for the customers. With the increased volume capacity of the Center, many more customers will be attained within an expected 1200 mile radius to the Center. This would include as far east as the Mississippi, North to Wyoming, West to Arizona. This program could virtually eliminate the financial needs of the Center, allow it to impact the city of Amarillo with new jobs, purchase the old YMCA building and remodel it to meet the specifications of Total Freedom Ministry (see link to this subsidiary of Cornerstone Outreach Center), and fund the growing Africa ministry.

North Amarillo Low-Income Housing Project

The Center has been in contact with some men who have a heart for North Amarillo and the need to give it and the people a face-lift which will make all of us proud. Through grants received by the City of Amarillo Housing Projects, the Center is going to work with these developers to provide them the money to build these homes, as well as trained individuals to come in and buy these homes at a reasonable price. Training classes should begin early 2007 with focus on meeting the requirements for purchase, and how to make your new house a home. Financial counseling will be presented as well. Area banks are going to assist the new homeowners in paying their bills, and other financial management issues.

Down payments will be provided through another grant opportunity which will make the process nearly flawless for the new home owners. The plans have already been drafted, the area for the new homes selected, and discussions with the City initiated, and many interested first-time home buyers prepared to take the classes and move into their new home. The only thing remaining is to receive the application, and subsequent approval, from the City of Amarillo, Department of Housing, and get the money to those building the homes. This is a very exciting opportunity.
